5 Amazing Hot Dog Recipes – Made Healthier

Hot dogs are one of those amazing food items that almost everyone enjoys and yet is so simple and easy to cook.  I was chatting with some girlfriends a few months back about cooking and we got on the topic of hot dogs.  We all had some great hot dog recipes that I would like to share.  Many of these recipes I had never even heard of, which made me wonder if other people knew about them.  Below is a collection of 10 hot dog recipes that I found to be very tasty, easy to make and very unusual.  I chose ingredients that are healthier, but feel free to modify them to suit you and your family.

Hot Dog Sandwich

The hot dog sandwich recipe was given to me by a friend who lives in Maine named Mandy, she has been eating this sandwich since she was a little girl.  She still makes them to this day, especially for her 1 year old son.

What you will need:

2 slices of whole wheat bread
2 slices of boars head American cheese
2 hot dogs ( I like Stop and Shop brand uncured)
Butter

Hot to make the hot dog sandwich:

1) Heat and lightly butter a frying pan
2) Smooth butter on 1 side of each piece of bread
3) Cut hot dog in half lengthwise
4) Assemble sandwich ( slice of bread, slice of cheese, hot dogs, another slice of cheese, slice of bread)
5) Cook in pan until cheese is melted and bread is toasted

Enjoy this tasty hot dog sandwich with some organic tomato soup and crackers or some SunChips.

Hot Dog Pancakes

This recipe was also given to me by Mandy.  Her 1 year old son loves to eat these pancakes for breakfast or dinner.

What you will need:

Whole grain Pancake mix and ingredients (eggs, water, oil, etc.)
Hot Dogs
Butter
Real Maple Syrup or Agave Syrup or Organic Ketchup

How to make hot dog pancakes:

1) Mix the pancake batter and set aside
2) Heat and lightly butter frying pan
3) Cut the hot dogs into bite size pieces
4) Pour pancake batter in pan ( any size pancake will work)
5) Place peices of hot dog in the pancake in the frying pan
5) Cook pancake until done

Eat your hot dog pancakes with hot maple syrup, agave syrup or organic ketchup.

Crescent Roll Hot Dogs

These hot dogs are perfect for a party or as an appetizer.

What you will need:

1 can of Pillsbury frozen crescent rolls
Hot Dogs
Cheese (optional)

Hot to make crescent roll hot dogs:

1) Set oven to 350 degrees
2) Wrap each hot dog with the dough
3) Optional: First wrap hot dog in cheese or bacon, then wrap with a crescent roll
4) Lay each wrapped hot dog on a baking pan
5) Bake for 13 – 17 minutes

Dip your crescent roll hot dog into some organic ketchup or mustard.  Serve with Annies organic mac and cheese.

Easy Baked Hot Dogs with Cheese

I have been eating baked hot dogs with cheese since I was a kid and it is very yummy and very easy to make.

What you will need:

Hot Dogs
Boars Head American cheese

How to make Easy Baked Hot Dogs with Cheese:

1) Set oven to 350 degrees
2) Slice cheese into strips about 1 inch wide
3) Slice hot dogs lengthwise, but do not cut all the way through
4) Place strips of cheese into sliced hot dogs
5) Place hot dogs on pan and bake until cheese is melted and hot dogs are hot

I like to eat my cheesy hot dogs with organic ketchup or mustard. Grilling tip: wrap each cheesy hot dog with bacon and grill over open fire!
