5 Things to do with those pesky bread ends
I was grilling some hot dogs today for dinner and noticed that I had no hot dog buns. I decided to use piece’s of bread instead of driving out to the store to buy some. As I was wrapping my hot dog in a piece of bread I wondered what most people do with the ends of their bread, otherwise known as the heals of bread. As we all know most bread comes in a loaf and has two ends. I throw the ends of my bread out into my yard for the bunnies and birds. I asked my sister in law Tabitha what she does with her bread ends and she said she throws them in the yard as well. I decided to do some research and find other uses for those unloved bread ends. I found the following ideas in my research:
Make breadcrumbs: Toast your stale bread ends, let cool, then place in a food processor or blender. Use in meatballs, as a crumb topping on mac and cheese, a coating on chicken and fish.
Make croutons: Cut your stale bread ends into small cubes, toss with seasoning and bake at 350 degrees until crisp, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and toss on salad or in soup.
Feed the animals/birds: The easiest way to recycle those bread ends is to throw them out your door into the yard or woods and feed the animals and birds.
Compost them: Add your bread ends to your compost pile.
Eat Them: I have read that there are MANY people that love to eat the ends of bread. Whether as a sandwich as toast or just plain. I think a great way to use your bread ends as a meal is to make small pizzas. Just place your bread end crust side down, add pizza sauce, cheese and topping. Toast in the toaster oven until done.
