Eat Healthy for Less Money

Although it may be hard to stay away from the Twinkies and Peanut butter Cup ice cream in your kitchen, it is a good idea to eat some healthy foods, especially if you have small kids in your home.  Eating healthy not only does a body good but it also keeps your body lean and in good shape if eaten properly.  Why not have some ice cream with a side of oatmeal?  Or how about oatmeal ice cream?  There are plenty of great healthy foods that can be purchased for less than $1, yes $1!!!  Believe it or not you can eat healthy and not break the bank.  I know that when I look at healthy foods I aways see the price tag along with it and it usually is higher than what I am used to, but there really are some healthy foods that are cheap.

Oats are a great addition to your family meals.  Not only are oats high in fiber, they also have been shown to lower cholesterol.  Some serving suggestions are: Hot oatmeal, oatmeal and nuts in milk and oatmeal cookies.  You can buy a weeks worth of oats for less than $1.

Eggs are one of the most versatile food items you can buy and you can get a half dozen for about $1.  They are a good source of protein, antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. You can make hard boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, egg sandwiches and so much more.

Potatoes are a great source of Vitamin C and  potassium and can be cooked in many different ways including baked potato, potato salad, scalloped potatoes and mashed potatoes.  Potatoes are very inexpensive and will last a long while in a cool dark place in your kitchen.

Nuts have a  high fat content, but they’re packed with the good-for-you fats—unsaturated and monounsaturated.  You can buy peanuts, walnuts, and almonds in the shells at a very low cost and you only need to eat a few to get nutritional benefits. Throw some nuts in your bag for a mid morning snack or toss them in your salad for some extra crunch.

Wild Rice is better for you than white rice and will only cost you a small amount of money more.  Low in fat and high in protein and fiber wild rice is a great addition to any dinner dish.

Next time you are in the grocery store look around in the produce, meat and dairy sections for some healthy and low cost, nutritious foods that will not break your budget but will keep your body healthy.
