Big Gas Prices and Small Cars
Gas prices are through the roof and yet everybody is still driving around like it is no big deal. I however feel that the price of gas is out of hand and should be lowered back down a few bucks. The chances of this happening however, I feel are slim to none. The gas companies are making so much money and the people and government are doing nothing to stop it, so why would they lower the prices. Because gas prices will probably be going up even more in the next few years we need to take action to try to save money. The best ways to save money on gas are: drive less, use your smallest car for most of your driving, trade in your SUV for a car. We all know that SUV’s no matter their size get gas mileage between 9-23 miles per gallon. While a car can get between 19-39 miles per gallon. This means that it would cost you less in gas to drive a car than an SUV.
Now, I know that there are some people who cannot live without their SUV, and that is fine, you will just be spending more on gas than people who are driving a car. If you have a large family, say 5 or more, than a SUV or a Minivan is your only option, and I understand. But, If you have a family of 4 or less a car will work just fine.
Here is an example of what I mean when I say that you will save money by using a car instead of your SUV. My husband and I own two vehicles: Kia Sorento SUV and a Hyundai Elantra Car. We wanted to figure out the cost in gas for 12,000 miles of driving each vehicle.
So, say we drive the KIA 12,000 miles at $4.00 per gallon at an average of 19 MPG: Total cost for gas: $2526.04.
And we drive the Elantra 12,000 miles at $4.00 per gallon at an average of 28 MPG: Total cost for gas: $1714.40.
As you can see that is a savings of $811.64. Now that is a big difference in price! There are so many other things I would like to buy with that money than gas! Wouldn’t you!
If you want to figure our how much your gas is costing you just divide the miles such as 12,000 (average for US drivers per year) by MPG your car gets such as 19 and then multiply that number by the amount per gallon of gas such as $4.00 per gallon. So your equation will look like this: 12,000/19=Gallons Gallonsx4.00=COST.
